Pronunciation and morphology notes

One million in Japanese is hyaku-man (100 x 10,000 = 1,000,000). There is no single Japanese word for “million”. The phrase is always “hundred ten-thousands”. This is the most common source of confusion for English-speakers reading Japanese financial reports: a budget of 100 oku is 10 billion in English, not 100 billion. Always count 4-digit groups, not 3.
