Pronunciation and morphology notes

2018 in modern Japanese can be read ni-sen-jū-hachi (two thousand eighteen) or, more colloquially in news contexts, ni-sen-jū-hachi-nen. The imperial form Heisei 30 (heisei san-jū-nen) is equally common. The 2018-2019 boundary marked the Heisei-to-Reiwa transition: Heisei ended on 30 April 2019.
